Visco-Elastic Foam

The terms Visco Foam and Visco-Elastic Foam refer to special foam, most often used in bedding, which is made primarily from polyurethane with added chemicals to increase the viscosity level and density.  Hence the moniker of "visco-elastic" foam.

VITA is the worlds largest foam manufacturer and has trademarked their Visco elastic foam as Vitality.

Viscoelastic, Visco-Elastic, and Viscoelasticity all describe materials with both viscous and elastic characteristics.

Visco-elastic foam has become important to the bedding industry because it is typically denser than ordinary foam. This allows it to be not only more supportive, but heavier as well, providing the simultaneous feeling of support and softness.  The density of the foam is temperature dependent and the higher density foams slowly react to body heat slowly, resulting in a soft mold shaped to the warm body, while the lower density memory foams quickly react to pressure more independantly of temperature.
