Foam Bed

Beds come in four basic sizes, each of which differes slightly depending on the country of use.  Over the years beds have evolved from straw matts to the more "high tech" beds of today such as foam beds and air beds.

Typical beds used in western culture are made up of three specific layers:

• Mattress
  
• Box Spring
  
• Bed Frame
  

In a foam bed, the mattress portion is made up of one or more types of solid foam.  The box spring, often a mattress-sized box containing upright coil springs, can be used for many types of beds.  Sometimes two box spring units can support a larger mattresss, such as a king.

Recent advances in bedding have seen the use of a "Mattress Topper" to further soften or customize the feel of the bed.  The term Mattress Topper refers to a special pad designed to lie on top an existing mattress. Toppers are typically contstructed from foam and intended to provide an additional layer of comfort and warmth for the user.

The bed frame serves the purpose of supporting, or holding together the box spring components, while also lifting the bed off the floor.

This size is fairly popular in college dormitories.

Three Quarter 

48 in x 75 in (1.2 m x 1.9 m)

Cconsidered obsolete by the major manufacturers.

Super Single 

48 in x 84 in (1.2 m x 2.15 m)

Olympic Queen 

66 in x 80 in (1.7 m x 2.05 m)

California Queen 

60 in x 84 in (1.5 m x 2.15 m)

Eastern King 

76 in x 80 in (1.95 m × 2.05 m)

This is the same as a U.S. King.

California King 

72 in x 84 in (1.85 m x 2.15 m)

This is a relatively  standard king size on the West Coast  sometimes referred to as the West Coast King".

Below is our attempt at a comprehensive list of All the bed types:

• Adjustable bed  - adjustable to a number of different positions
• Air bed - inflatable mattress, requiring an electric air pump for inflation.  May or may not have controls for adustability.
  
• Bassinet - small bed sized for infants.
• Box-bed - a bed surronded by panels or shutters, or a bed designed to fold-up into a box.
• Brass bed -  a bed with the frame portion primarily made brass.
  
• Bunk bed - two or more beds stacked vertically, usually with a ladder for access to the upper level/s.
  
• Captain's bed - bed with drawers and storage compartments below the box springs as part of the frame.
  
• Crib - small bed specifically for babies and infants.
• Cot is a simple, temporary, portable bed used by armies and large organizations in times of crisis.
• Daybed - can be used as a couch during waking hours and as a bed for sleeping.
• Deathbed -  Bed on which a dying person is placed to spend their last hours or a bed or structure on which the deceased is placed for viewing.
  
• Futon is a - Traditionally a style of Japanese bed with no box springs.
• Four poster bed - Has four posts, one in each corner, usually a part of the bed frame.
• Hammock - Cloth bed usually supported only at the ends.
  
• Hospital bed - Bed containing special features (removable side bars, wheels, adjustable to multiple positions) to benefit patients and medical Manjaa is traditional Punjabi bed made of tied ropes bordered by a wooden frame.
• Memory Foam Bed - A bed with the mattress portion constructed from Polyurethane based foam with chemicals added to the viscosity level and density.(further memory foam details).
• Murphy bed - Utilized as a means to save space, this bed is built with the capability to fold-up into a wall or small closet when not in use.
• Platform bed - mattress place on a flat, raised structure.
  
• RV bed - A bed utilized in a Recreational Vehicle or other locations in which space is at a premium.
  
• Sofabed  (sleeper sofa) - A bed that is stored inside a sofa. Often uncomfortable because of support bars and thin mattress required for folding.  Compfort may be greatly enhanced by replacing the standard mattress with an air filled replacement mattress.  The replacement air mattress can be inflated during use and deflated when the bed is folded back into the sofa position.
  
• Trundle bed - Secondary bed which is stored beneath a twin bed of Day Bed.  The Trundle portion pulls out from beneath the twin or day bed and pops up to be approximately the same height.
• Vibrating bed - contains a vibrating mechanism, typically a motor with the shaft intentionally out of balance to create the vibration.  Often found in hotels or motels and requiring the deposit of a coin for activation.
  
• Waterbed utilizes a mattress filled with water in conjunction with a special frame to support the large amount of weight generated by the water.
