Foam Bed

A bed is a piece of furniture on which one or more people sleep or spend their evening hours.  A foam bed is constructed such that the mattress portion is created from from Polyurethane based foam with chemicals added to the viscosity level and density.(further memory foam details).

Beds come in four basic sizes, each of which differes slightly depending on the country of use.  Over the years beds have evolved from straw matts to the more "high tech" beds of today such as foam beds and air beds.

Typical beds used in western culture are made up of three specific layers:

In a foam bed, the mattress portion is made up of one or more types of solid foam.  The box spring, often a mattress-sized box containing upright coil springs, can be used for many types of beds.  Sometimes two box spring units can support a larger mattresss, such as a king.

Recent advances in bedding have seen the use of a "Mattress Topper" to further soften or customize the feel of the bed.  The term Mattress Topper refers to a special pad designed to lie on top an existing mattress. Toppers are typically contstructed from foam and intended to provide an additional layer of comfort and warmth for the user.

The bed frame serves the purpose of supporting, or holding together the box spring components, while also lifting the bed off the floor.
